If you could have something named after you, what would it be?

Whatever it is, it would be something that reflects your personality, your interests, your achievements, or your legacy. It would be something that you are proud of and that others can appreciate and remember.

Many things in the world are named after people who invented, discovered, or inspired them. Some examples are:

  • The Bailey bridge, a portable prefabricated truss bridge that can be quickly assembled by military engineers. It is named after Donald Bailey, a British civil servant who designed it during World War II1.
  • The Büchner funnel, a device used in chemistry to filter liquids from solids. It is named after Ernst Büchner, a German chemist who invented it in 18882.
  • The Botts’ dot, a round, white raised pavement marker used to mark lanes on roads. It is named after Elbert Dysart Botts, a California Department of Transportation engineer who developed it in the 1950s1.
  • The Codd bottle, a type of glass bottle with a marble and a rubber seal in the neck that traps carbonated beverages. It is named after Hiram Codd, an English engineer who patented it in 18722.
  • The Crompton’s mule, a machine that spins cotton and other fibers into yarn. It is named after Samuel Crompton, an English inventor who created it in 17792.
  • The Davy lamp, a safety lamp for miners that prevents explosions from flammable gases. It is named after Sir Humphry Davy, a British chemist who devised it in 18152.
  • The Dr. Martens boots, a brand of leather boots with distinctive yellow stitching and air-cushioned soles. They are named after Dr. Klaus Märtens, a German army doctor who created them in 19451.

These are just some of the many things that bear the names of their creators or benefactors. But what if you could have something named after you? What would it be?

Maybe you would like to have a scientific discovery or invention named after you, such as a new element, a new species, or a new device. Maybe you would like to have a place or a building named after you, such as a city, a park, or a museum. Maybe you would like to have an artistic or cultural product named after you, such as a book, a song, or a style.

Whatever it is, it would be something that reflects your personality, your interests, your achievements, or your legacy. It would be something that you are proud of and that others can appreciate and remember.
